Diagnostic ultrasound, also called Sonography or USG is an imaging method that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of structures within your body. The images can provide valuable information for diagnosing and treating a variety of diseases and conditions.

Why it's done ?

Ultrasound is used for various purposes like:

• To evaluate abnormalities of intra abdominal & pelvic organs like liver, kidneys, spleen, pancreas, uterus, ovaries, etc
• Diagnose gallbladder disease
• To monitor the developing fetal well-being during pregnancy.
• Guide a needle for biopsy or tumor treatment
• Examine a breast lump
• Check your thyroid gland
• Detect genital and prostate problems
• Assess joint inflammation (synovitis)
• Evaluate blood flow to organs and tumoral blood flow.

Risks -

Diagnostic ultrasound is a safe procedure that uses low-power sound waves. There are no known risks.

Ultrasound Scans:

Ultrasound Upper Abdomen:

• Patient should come empty stomach in the morning or must be empty stomach for at least last 4 – 5 hours during the day.

Ultrasound Lower Abdomen / Pelvis: Patient can have breakfast

• Patient should drink 1 /2 – 1 litre of water, hold urine and report when the bladder is full.
• Do not empty the bladder, unless asked by the doctor.

Ultrasound whole abdomen:

• Patient should come empty stomach in the morning or should be empty stomach for at least last 4 – 5 hours. Patient should drink ½ - 1 litre of water and hold the urine and report when the bladder is full.

Ultrasound Small Parts:

• No preparation is required for Breast, Thyroid, Scrotum.

Musculoskeletal scans -

• No preparation is required.

Transcavitary scans -

• TVS & TRS- require no preparation.

Pregnancy/ obstetric Scan -

• No fasting required. May require to hold urine for 1-2 hrs before examination.
